Day 2 Siem Reap: Angkor Wat, Blessing Ceremony, Angkor Thom with Sunset and Dinner Dance Show
This morning head to Angkor Wat with your guide in an air-conditioned car. Explore this majestic temple throughout the morning while it is still cool and has fewer tourists. Your guide will take you to an active Wat where you should change to clothes you can get wet in as here you will experience the ceremony “Srouch Tec”, which roughly translates into “pour water”. A monk will chant in ancient Pali as he splashes water over you, washing away your sins and bad luck so you can start fresh and by being a good person you can increase your good luck. Return to your hotel for lunch or have your guide drop you off in town where they can help you find a good lunch spot. Remember to take a look at our Cheat Sheet which lists a number of our favorite restaurant recommendations!
In the afternoon head to Angkor Thom, the famous walled city and see the many temples within its borders, including the fascinating Bayon temple with its many magnificent faces smiling out. There are several beautiful spots from which to watch the sunset. Discuss with your guide where you would like to be and then relax and enjoy a memorable end to your day at the temples.
In the evening enjoy a traditional Khmer dinner and dance show put on by Raffles.
Meals included: Dinner
Day 3 Siem Reap: Beng Mealea, Banteay Srei, and Other Temples and Private Photographer
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before leaving the crowds behind and heading to Beng Mealea, one of Angkor’s more mysterious temples located 40km outside of the main temple complex. At the temple your guide will help you imagine how it once was as you pick your way through the rubble now surrounded by jungle. Continue on to Banteay Srei, an intricately carved temple known as the Lady Temple, and have lunch at a nearby local restaurant. On your way back to town stop to visit Banteay Kdei and Ta Prohm, two of the prettiest temples in the complex, before returning to your hotel late afternoon.
Your tour this morning includes something extra special - you will be accompanied by photographer and long-term Siem Reap resident, Anna Bella Betts. Anna, who knows the Angkor temples inside out, will record your tour with a mixture of ‘fly-on-the-wall’ and directed posed images - just let her know which type of photos you prefer and she will tailor the pictures to your taste. While her approach will be very much to keep her distance and let you enjoy your tour uninterrupted, she is a valuable source of information regarding the best viewpoints at the temples and can help you with your own images. Your portfolio of between 50 - 100 high resolution jpeg images will be delivered to your hotel on a USB drive tomorrow.
Meals included: Lunch
Day 4 Siem Reap: Kayaking Tour
Experience a unique Journeys Within day kayaking on the Tonle Sap Lake. You will set out around 8am and drive for about an hour before boarding a boat for a 40 minute ride to one of the lake villages. Here the homes are built on stilts because, while in the dry season the surrounding area is dry, in the rainy season it is flooded and so they rise above the water level. You will arrive at the local home that stores the canoes and after a short safety briefing head off with your guide who will lead you through waterways, flooded forests and out into the Tonle Sap Lake where you can take a dip if you wish. After you’ve had a good explore, wind your way back through the village, taking in local life in this watery environment before returning to a local home for some lunch and a leisurely boat and car ride back to town.
Meals included: Lunch
Day 5 Siem Reap: Village Dining Sunset
You will be met at your hotel at 3pm and taken to the beautiful Kompheim village, located just outside Siem Reap. Here you can enjoy a two-hour walk through a traditional village with one of the local guides, who will give you an introduction to the daily lives of the villagers. Finish this with sunset drinks at the beautiful and unique Village House, where you can relax and enjoy your very own private dining experience. After enjoying your special culinary experience, you will be transferred back to your hotel around 9pm.
