Day 3   Siem Reap: Backstreet Academy Palm Hats Making and JWOC Art Class

You will be picked up and taken to Backstreet Academy and learn about Palm Hats Making. The quintessential palm hat, used by farmers around South East Asia where farming is a mainstay for most families. Its use? To protect farmers from the tropical sun and even the rain when working on their fields. A popular cooling and protective accessory that is both functional and fashionable!

Custom make your own palm hat with Ms Mom! Her traditional technique of making palm hats starts with a fascinating use of palm tree fibers as twine to secure the frame of the hat together. And to think that her hats are durable for 2 -3 years is just amazing! Once you finish with the frames, you move on to sow the palm leaves together to secure it onto the frame. This is the tricky part and determines the outcome of your hat! After finishing the sewing work, choose your favorite colored cloth to border the hat with. And within a matter of 3 hours, you have your own handmade khmer palm hat. Say goodbye to tans! The tour takes about 3 hours.

Sunday afternoons are special at Journeys Within Our Community. We hold our art class for local students at 2:30pm - a no-pressure class where anyone is invited to come, play games, sing songs and do a simple and rewarding art project. Volunteers are great for this class; we break the students into groups and as a volunteer you can join a group and help the little ones with scissors and other tricky tasks and give the older students encouragement and attention. It is fun for whole family and a great way to get involved and see our project in action. You will have a chance to meet with our scholarship students and gain a greater understanding about the work we do within our community.

Please arrive at 2:20pm before the lesson starts so the teacher can explain the project and you can get oriented. The class runs until 4pm.
